That first Korean study that you used- did they differentiate the cases between the 4 different types of jabs?

I got omicron and no gastro issues (but i felt awful like when i had dengue fever). My son also had omicron, no gastro (sinuses were runny and he had a fever and a headache). When he had to get J and j for college a year before his omicron, he had only a fever- it was terrible, 105.3 degrees, i thought the thermometer was broken. I had to put him in a cold bath for 4 hours with advil and tylenol to get it down to 103.

So sorry to hear about your son's experience with vax. So pointless for a young man.

Here's the article if interested:

I've been forgetting to embed links to the articles in my posts since I wasn't sure how often people were viewing them but I'll try to remember again.

Sorry that happened to him, as that fever sounds horrible!

Unfortunately it doesn't appear that they correlated symptoms with vaccines and only took record of the category (i.e. mild, moderate, severe) of the symptoms. Nearly 3/4 of the participants had AstraZeneca with most of them in the mild and severe categories. You can see it in Table 1.

I should have noted, but the exclusion criteria refers to a recent COVID illness and not any prior history, so the symptoms should be taken with an understanding that there's no indication to their immunity status prior to vaccination.

Thank you for this article. I am curious if you have seen any studies or information about Covid and Covid vaccines in those with Celiac. I have Celiac and my GI system was definitely impacted both times I got Covid.

I have not looked into IBS in particular. It's interesting that searching PubMed for IBS and COVID brings up evidence of IBS and persistent GI issues in those who have gotten sick, but nothing in particular about possible severity in those with IBS or Chron's.

There is this article from Nov 2021 and a quick glance makes it appear that IBS isn't associated with increased risk of severe COVID, but again I haven't looked at this article:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8570424/

For Celiac there is this article from Feb 2021 and from a quick glance it appears to also suggest no increased risk of severe COVID or death, but again I haven't looked at this study:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7899312/

One of the issues is that there's a decoupling in the research being conducted. If we assume that the gut may be influenced by SARS-COV2 then we should see what mechanisms would cause that (i.e. if it's related to the microbiome) and how this would be affected by those with GI issues or other diseases related to the gut, but most studies will only give a very narrow look.

For instance in trying to look up GI issues related to the vaccines a lot of the articles that come up only look at whether those with IBS or other gut issues respond well to the vaccines, not if they are at increased risk of adverse reactions.

With Celiac several of the articles are about dealing with Celiac during COVID, but not whether Celiac itself may be one at increased risk.

Hopefully this helps. I'll try to find more information if I come across them.

My neighbor was in and out of the hospital for the last 9 months with gut issues, finally culminating in an ostomy bag. He had to get the shot for his job.

He says there will be no boosters.

That sounds awful! It definitely seems like GI issues should be looked at more closely with respect to these vaccines.

I was surprised I had no GI issues with my omicron, as I am "prone" to them. In that I mean my grandmother and mother had what they called "nervous stomach" and I grew up thinking I did too. I've since figured out most of the triggers and can usually be fine. Anyway, I wouldn't have been surprised if I had had GI issues with omicron, but aside from a slight lack of appetite (lost 5 lbs!) I was fine. My husband and our daughter (13) were GI-free as well with omicron. All unvax.

Interesting! I personally didn't as well, but I probably didn't notice because of my tonsillitis and lack of eating.

I went back to check on if Omicron was still related with a lot of GI issues and there are a ton of stories on it. It's important mainly because Omicron had less affinity for ACEII, and so this may have suggested reduced tropism for the gut. Paired with a greater tropism for the upper respiratory tract then that may have meant less GI issues for some, although systemic inflammation is still correlated with altered gut microbiome and GI issues, so it suggests a lot of complex factors may be at play.
