Fascinating scientific exploration of Turkey Day food coma!

Just a little bit of levity to mix in with all of the other crazy stuff! This post really just boiled down to being a long-winded "no, it's not true" which is pretty clear given that tons of other non-healthful foods are eaten on Thanksgiving.

Yams are my go-to food for getting back to sleep quickly after waking up hard in the wee hours (but only if I can't sleep in; even semi-retirement is good that way). Turkey, not so much, but half the foods in that list of high-tryptophan foods are staples of mine. They all seem to help with getting back to sleep.

We're weird around here. We don't stuff ourselves at Thanksgiving, and more or less don't eat things we shouldn't, and aren't more sleepy after that meal than any other, so I don't know. But I did have a sandwich with turkey, bacon, and avocado at lunch yesterday, eating out, and oh did I sleep well that afternoon. Maybe it was the gluten-free bread?

One of the studies I referenced above actually mentioned another small study where older participants were given a bowl of cereal and milk at night and saw how their sleep patterns went. There's also something to be said about a late night glass of milk given the high tryptophan content, and apparently tryptophan content may differ based on the time of cow milking which is very fascinating.

Yams are great until I don't think they are! It's like sweet potato fries which I have such a weird temperament with. It's weird how much tougher they are than regular potatoes, but that's probably why they are more nutrient dense. I may look into yams a bit if anyone seems interested. I may have almost burned the house down one Thanksgiving when I put marshmallows on top of a sweet potato casserole and forgot that I left it under the broiler 🤦‍♂️.

I suppose I am one of those huge hypocrites that claims people need to eat better but may not be doing so myself. I always make excuses for Thanksgiving, especially as I tend to be the main cook which includes making the turkey, ham, and all the sides so I tend not to eat too much while people are around, but I may indulge when no one is looking. I'll learn soon to not be such a glutton!

If you engage in gluttony, you'll be in a coma no matter what you eat lol.
