Quercetin is one of the most fascinating compounds in the realm of COVID therapeutics and prophylactics. It seems to serve as a jack of all trades compound, and considering that Quercetin is found in many of the fruits and vegetables we consume daily it may point to a long, ancestral relationship between our ancestors and their diet.
Part I: Brief Overview & Mechanisms of Action
This is a general overview of Quercetin and covers the wide array of Quercetin’s properties, including its antioxidant, antiviral, and immunomodulatory activity. Overall, Quercetin has plenty of benefits.
Part II: Targeting SARS-COV2
This newsletter focused solely on Quercetin and its relationship to SARS-COV2 infection. Quercetin may bind to ACEII receptors, which may point to a method of inhibiting viral particles from binding. More specific to the actual virus, Quercetin seems to mainly target the main protease of SARS-COV2 either at the enzyme’s active site or at a site outside of the typical active site.
Part III: Clinical Evidence, Perspective, and Concluding Remarks
The literature is a bit scarce when it comes to clinical trials. However, from what I can find and piece together there does seem to be some benefit with prophylactic supplementation and the relationship with COVID infection. More studies will be needed to help add to the literature. With that being said, what we may be seeing instead is not the benefit of actual supplementation but possibly due to a change in the foods we consume and the nutritional content of our typical diets. We may not be seeing improvement due to a compound actually being effective, but because its supplementation is a near return to the diets we all should be eating by adding back in something we are likely to have now depend on. In an era where we continue to become evermore health-conscience we may need to use this as a reevaluation for how we view food and its relationship to our health.
Part IV: Citations
I will try to post citations together with these collections to save up room. But since this was already posted separately here ya go!
